School District TK/K Programs

Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is a part of the state’s Universal PreKindergarten mixed delivery system to meet the early education needs of four-year-old children and their families. TK is an essential part of transforming California’s schools and giving every student in California a great start. Families have the choice to send their child to a TK program.
Transitional kindergarten (TK) is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program that uses a modified kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate. Each elementary or unified school district must offer TK classes for all children eligible to attend. A child who completes one year in a TK program may continue in a kindergarten program for one additional year. Each elementary or unified school district must offer kindergarten classes for all children eligible to attend.

Transitional Kindergarten will be available to all 4-year-olds by 2025-2026. Below is the contact information for the Sacramento County school districts offering Transitional Kindergarten. To find out which school serves your zip code, visit the SCOE Interactive Boundaries Map page.

Most transitional kindergarten and kindergarten programs are part-day, focusing on providing a strong foundation for early learning.
If your family needs before- or after-school care, contact your local school or Child Action for referrals to school-age programs to ensure your child receives comprehensive support throughout the day.

After School Care –

School districts offer School Readiness Programs and Early Learning Programs for children zero to five years of age. Contact the Early Learning Department in your district to find out what they offer and how you and your child can participate.
